If you are looking to sell or purchase a home, these tricks to making a small space look bigger may come in handy! When you are getting your home ready to put on the market, you want it to look spacious, not cramped. And when you are getting ready to buy a home, you may not be able to afford as much home as you would like. But you can still buy a home in your budget and use these tricks to make it feel bigger!
1. Get rid of clutter
Clutter is probably the biggest culprit when it comes to a home looking small. When someone says their home is too small, many times they come to that conclusion because they are running out of room for the stuff. What if they had less stuff? Essentially, less stuff=more room. And clutter on counters and tables can make a space look smaller.
2. Let in light
A dark space feels small. Not only does it feel small but it also feels dirty and dingy. By opening the blinds, letting in light, putting up sheer curtains instead of dark, thick ones, you can let it a lot of natural light. Also, make sure all light bulbs are working. Maybe add an extra lamp or install a different lighting fixture. More light makes a space feel bigger!
3. Keep it clean
A dirty space can also feel small and just place yuck. When your home is clean, if feels brighter and bigger! Clorox or other cleaning wipes (even baby wipes) are great to have in a drawer or on the counter to wipe away a mess. Makes it convenient and fast to clean off the counters and give your home that sparkling clean feel.
4. Lighten walls
Lighter paint on the walls can really make a big difference in how big a space feels. Dark and deep tones can close a room in making it feel much smaller and cramped. By choosing a lighter paint for the walls, you could really widen the feel of the room.
5. Furniture off walls
As odd as it may sound, putting space in between furniture and the walls can give the illusion of more space. Pulling your couch out a few inches even from the walls or placing your bed on an angle in the corner can actually make a room look bigger. And hey, this one does not cost you much time or money so its worth trying to see if you like the look!
6. Mirrors!
Adding mirrors to your decor is a great way to give the illusion of more space. Not only do mirrors reflect light making a space brighter, they mirror an image making a room look bigger than it is. You can use one big mirror or a bunch of smalls ones. They are great neutral decor and also help a space look larger.
These are just a few tips on making your home look bigger. If you are planning on selling your home in Northern Virginia and you need more ideas of how to stage it, give me a call today!
