Warmer nights will soon be here. And while heading to pop-up drive-ins or local outdoor movie screenings always makes for a fun evening, there’s just something cozy about movie night in your own backyard.

Setting up for DIY film under the stars does require some advance planning, though, and an investment that costs more than a few movie tickets. But the upfront expense can bring years of unlimited outdoor entertainment, and sets the stage for memorable nights with family and close friends.

We’re sharing some of our favorite outdoor movie essentials we’ve personally purchased this past year, and some nice-to-haves to make the experience feel extra-special.

THE ESSENTIALS

PROJECTOR

The first step to setting up your backyard movie night is to find the right projector. Two main variables to consider are backyard size and the amount of surrounding light.  As such, there are a few important tech terms to know: lumens and throw-distance, which refer to brightness and the amount of space between seating and the screen, respectively.

Other things to look for include definition (1080p resolution is ideal), the number of ports (HDMI, USB, etc), color spectrum, and keystroke correction, which keeps the image level if the projector is on an uneven surface such as grass.

We’ve been loving this projector from Vankyo. Every time we host a movie night, we get complements on the sharpness of the image. Plus, we can easily hookup to our Roku or Amazon Firestick. Of course, there are more expensive models that will work during dusk when there’s still a hint of light outside, but for our movie nights, this works just fine.

SCREEN

A good screen is important and there are a few different options. You can go the DIY route and attach an ordinary bed sheet to a fence or the side of the house. When it’s not in use, just roll it up to store it.

Or, you can purchase a wrinkle-free screen with a stand that can easily be transported. A good screen like this does make a difference and will enhance the picture.

PROJECTOR STAND

Often overlooked, a projector stand is important and can help you save setup time. Before we purchased one, we’d try a combination of books, folding tables and even an upside-down bowl to find just the right height/angle. As you can imagine this arrangement resembled the childhood game of Topple. Instead, we recommend a low-cost projector stand to help you achieve the perfect movie display without the extra stress.

SPEAKERS

OK so this one isn’t necessarily essential but it does help. The last thing you want is to have an epic movie setup with mediocre sound. A separate set of outdoor speakers will deliver a better outdoor movie experience  — and it’s tough to beat this wireless one from JBL for portability and powerful sound quality. Small but mighty it won’t break the bank plus it’s also Bluetooth enabled – bonus!

SEATING

As for seating, while a lawn blanket and pillows make for a cozy surface, a few chair options are nice to have for back support. And maybe you’ve already got perfectly fine deck chairs or pool loungers, but something low to the ground and extra comfortable http://theshoalspharmacy.com  will make taking in a full-length feature that much more enjoyable.

Though we couldn’t resist sharing these adorable kids DIY drive-in box cars – perfect for summer birthdays!

NICE TO HAVE

POPCORN CART

It goes without saying that popcorn is a must for movie night. And sure you can provide individual bags of pre-popped popcorn (which we typically do) but for the ultimate movie experience, check out this popcorn cart. It’s conveniently located on wheels and can make 10 cups of popcorn. We haven’t personally purchased this one yet but definitely have it in our Amazon wish list!

POPCORN BOXES

Sometimes it’s the small details that make everyday occasions memorable. These popcorn boxes are an inexpensive, fun add-on for an extra-special movie night. They’re quick to assemble and will last for multiple evenings, too, with 20 recyclable boxes per package. Simply fold them up and pour in the popcorn.

LIGHTS

Good outdoor lighting is an enhancement not just for your movie night but your entire backyard oasis! A few inexpensive LED, warm edison bulb lights strung around your patio can really elevate your movie experience. To make this work, a popular option is to string them through 9 or 10 ft light poles that anchor your patio. Or, you can use rope lighting and wrap it around your deck. A newer option is curtain lighting, shown here.

Whatever you choose we recommend plug-ins vs solar for the best lighting results. And of course, be sure that they are safe for outdoor use.
