There are pros and cons to an area no matter where you live. Personally, I love Northern Virginia and I am here to stay. So I came up with my 10 Reasons to Move to Norther Virginia for those of you who are in the process or looking to move to this area. I hope these will excite you and motivate you to come join us more quickly!
Everywhere you look in Virginia, you are surrounded by the beautiful history that has helped sculpt this country’s foundation. From George Washington’s restored home in Mount Vernon, to civil war battle sites in Manassas and Fredericksburg, to of course all the monuments and museums in D.C., you history buffs will be in your glory!
2. Resources
Everything is at your fingertips in Northern Virginia! Since the area attracts so many working families, there are a lot of services supplied for these families including countless schools, day cares, camps, parks, playgrounds, museums, unlimited job opportunities, colleges, and universities. Resources are unlimited and available in much of the surrounding suburban neighborhoods that people commute do D.C. from.
Although other areas of the United States may be struggling economically, Northern Virginia’s economy is going strong. The strength of the economy is affected by the fact that there are so many jobs available in the D.C. Metro area. The real estate market has seen its ups and downs but because of the huge job pool and opportunities there is less of a chance for foreclosure. The real estate market is always hopping because there are so many people moving in and out of D.C. area.
I would venture out to say that D.C. metro area and Northern Virginia is one of the top areas that shows the true “melting pot” of cultures in America. It is beautiful how so many cultures can be intertwined yet still have their strong connection to their heritage.
There seems to be no “one” minority as there is such a beautiful mix of ethnicities and cultures. Since there is such a wide variety, there is also a lot available to each culture with specialized gift stores, grocery stores, parades, festivals, classes, and much more.
5. Entertainment
There is no opportunity for boredom in this area. There is always some festival, party, concert, parade, show, game, class, or event going on in or around D.C. There is the Verizon Center and Patriot Center which host many sports teams and big names such as Macklemore, Jay Z, Miley Cirus, Katy Pary, and shows like the Nut Cracker. There are also great holiday traditions like fire works, festivals and parades in not only D.C. but in many of the small towns like Old town Alexandria or Old Town Manassas.
6. Access
Not only do you have access to multiple Museums and tourist attractions within the D.C. metro area, you have access to multiple ways of public transportation. There are buses, trains, trolleys, and the Metro which is the main line to get commuters into D.C. without having to drive in.
Along with so many attractions within the immediate area, there are also countless attractions within a 2-3 hour drive or weekend getaway. You can reach anything from Ocean City Maryland beaches, exploring the caves of the Lurray Caverns, canoeing down the Shenandoah River, skiing on the Massanutten slopes, visiting the Balitmore Harbor and Aquarium, to exploring historic Williamsburg.
7. Sports
Some may say that many of our sports teams are not worth cheering for but we always put up a good fight. I am a die hard Redskins fan so I will keep cheering no matter their winning/losing streak. But besides the Redskins, there are the Washington Wizards, Washington Nationals, and the Washington Capitals, and even Baltimore teams since they are close. There’s always a game to go to and a stadium dog to be eaten.
8. Medical Resources
There are many competing medical resources such as Inova Fairfax Hospital which ranks number one in D.C. and also competes with plenty other top ranking hospitals in the area. D.C. has the Children’s National Medical Center which is a leader in developing innovative new treatments in children’s illnesses. Besides hospitals there are many treatment centers and physical therapy offices along with innumerable amount of doctor’s offices and staff to choose from.
Since Virginia is centrally located on the east coast there are four specific seasons. As much as I love that perfect partly cloudy 78 degree day, I would get bored without the diverse temperatures and seasons. Winter in Northern Virginia is mild yet still cold enough for some good snowy fun. There are also a few good slopes within 1-3 hour driving distance.
Spring is beautiful and the busiest time for D.C. tourism with the cherry blossom season in full bloom. Summer is definitely on the hot side but there are countless water parks and attractions in the nearby area. Fall brings beautiful scenery with the change of colors. There are great festivals and flea markets in the fall and beautiful tree lightings come Christmas.
10. Country Suberbs and City Living
There are so many options for you to find your living preference in this Northern Virginia/D.C. area. You can choose from the hopping city life of downtown D.C. where there is always something going on or a new place to eat.
Or you can pick from multiple suburban living areas with beautiful neighborhoods and great schools. There are also great historic areas like Old Town Alexandria which is centrally located close to D.C. and also neat old history type settings.
