How to Stage your Storage and Closet Space

How important is storage when it comes to buyers looking for a home. Should you worry about what your storage looks like when you are staging? How high should it be on your must have list when you are house hunting?

According to research, sufficient storage space is one of the most important features potential buyers are looking for in a home. Even if it is not on their must have lists that they give to their realtor, it is something that is high on their mind when they come to look at a home.

One of the biggest mistakes a seller can make before putting their home on the market is to ignore/neglect their closets. An over packed or unorganized closet sends the message that this home is too small for you or their is not enough storage space and can send the potential buyer on to the next listing. Avoid this mistake by staging your storage space!

How to stage storage space:

1. Purge
purge closet
Go through the closet and get rid of everything you do not want to take with you to the new house. Trash or donate to help clear out the stuff you do not need. This also saves you a step when you do start packing for your move. Having less in your closet can help make your closet look bigger.

2. Organize
stage your closet
Use baskets, bins and even labels to get your closet in tip top shape! Having an organized closet not only gives the illusion of space, it also can send the message to buyers that if the closets are well taken care of, the rest of the house must be too.

3. Store
storage unit
If you really do have too much stuff that you need to bring to your new home but it does not all fit in your current storage well, consider storing it with a friend, family member, or even renting a storage unit until you move. This will help show extra space in your closets and help buyers feel they will have enough storage if they lived there too!
