Downtown DC Holiday Market

Where: held at F Street NW, between 7th and 9th

When: November 22 – December 23, 2024, from 12:00 PM to 8:00 PM daily

Immerse yourself in the festive spirit at the Downtown DC Holiday Market, a beloved holiday tradition celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. Located in the heart of Penn Quarter-Chinatown, this European-style outdoor marketplace transforms F Street NW into a winter wonderland from November 22 to December 23, 2024. With over 100 local artisans, artists, and crafters showcasing unique handmade goods and specialty items, it’s the perfect place to find one-of-a-kind gifts for everyone on your list. Visitors can indulge in festive treats from dedicated food vendors, sip on holiday-inspired drinks at the Winter Chalet, and enjoy live entertainment. Open daily from 12 PM to 8 PM on weekdays and 11 AM to 8 PM on weekends, this enchanting market offers a magical shopping experience for all ages.

National Menorah Lighting

Where: The Ellipse at President’s Park

When: December 25, 2024, 3:30 – 5pm

The National Menorah Lighting is a cherished holiday tradition in Washington, DC, symbolizing religious freedom and unity. This grand event features the illumination of a towering 30-foot menorah, accompanied by performances from Military Bands of the Military District of Washington and often a celebrity Jewish artist. Attendees can enjoy festive music, traditional foods, and entertainment. The ceremony also highlights the “Mendy Deren National Menorah Essay Contest,” where winning students read their essays on the meaning of Hanukkah. This free, family-friendly celebration attracts visitors from across the nation and is broadcast to millions worldwide, making it a significant part of the capital’s holiday season.

National Christmas Tree Lighting

Where: The Ellipse at President’s Park

When: December 5, 2024 (in-person ceremony), December 20, 2024 (television broadcast)

The annual lighting of the National Christmas Tree is a heartwarming ceremony that brings together families and friends to celebrate the holiday season in Washington, DC. This beloved tradition, which dates back to 1923, will take place on December 5, 2024, at President’s Park on the Ellipse, just south of the White House. The event features live musical performances from renowned artists such as Mickey Guyton, James Taylor, and Trisha Yearwood, creating a festive atmosphere that marks the official start of the holiday season. After the ceremony, visitors can enjoy viewing the National Christmas Tree and the 58 surrounding trees that honor each state and territory. This enchanting event is free to attend and offers a magical experience for all ages. 

Season’s Greenings at the U.S. Botanic Garden

Where: US Botanic Garden

When: November 28, 2024 – January 5, 2025

Experience the enchantment of the U.S. Botanic Garden’s holiday exhibit, Season’s Greenings, where you can marvel at stunning miniature DC landmarks crafted entirely from plant materials. This beloved annual display runs from November 28, 2024, to January 5, 2025, and features G-gauge model trains weaving through beautifully designed scenes that celebrate pollinators and their vital role in nature. Visitors will be captivated by the vibrant poinsettias and festive decorations throughout the conservatory, making it a delightful experience for all ages. Admission is free, and the garden is open daily from 10 AM to 5 PM, with extended hours on select evenings in December. 

Hanukkah Party at Decades DC

Where: Decades DC

When: December 24, 2024, from 9:00 PM to December 25, 2024, at 3:00 AM

Experience the ultimate Hanukkah celebration at Decades DC’s Christmas Eve party, a vibrant nightlife event exclusively for adults aged 21-49. Located at 1219 Connecticut Avenue NW, this festive gathering promises an unforgettable night of music, dancing, and holiday cheer. The party runs from 9:00 PM on December 24, 2024, to 3:00 AM on December 25, 2024, offering revelers a chance to dance the night away with friends. Tickets are available through Eventbrite, and VIP table reservations can be secured by texting 347-719-1064. Don’t miss this exciting opportunity to celebrate Hanukkah in true DC style!

Annual (Pre)Hanukkah Party

Where: Nat. Museum of American Jewish Military History

When: Tuesday, December 17, 2024, from 6:30 PM to 9:00 PM

The National Museum of American Jewish Military History invites you to their annual Pre-Hanukkah Party on Tuesday, December 17, 2024, from 6:30 PM to 9:00 PM. This festive celebration explores Jewish military history while enjoying traditional Hanukkah treats like latkes, jelly doughnuts, and gelt. Guests can tour the museum at 6:00 PM before the party begins, learning about the contributions of Jewish Americans to the nation’s armed forces. Co-sponsored by the Jewish Study Center, this event offers a unique blend of historical education and holiday fun at 1811 R Street Northwest.

Community Menorah Lighting

Where: Church of Reformation at 212 E Capitol St NE

When: Saturday, December 28, 2024

The 11th Annual Capitol Hill Menorah Lighting will take place on Saturday, December 28, 2024, marking the fourth night of Hanukkah. Hosted on the front steps of the Church of Reformation at 212 E Capitol St NE, this community event brings together families and neighbors to celebrate the holiday spirit. The 9-foot outdoor menorah, dedicated to past BID Board Chairman Paul Pascal, serves as a centerpiece for the gathering. Attendees can enjoy traditional refreshments like hot chocolate, coffee, jelly doughnuts, and potato latkes while experiencing the warmth of community connection.
